Opposition parties under the INDIA bloc continued their protest in Parliament on Thursday against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, expressing concerns over possible large-scale deletion of voters.

Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, and several other MPs joined the demonstration outside Parliament. They also raised objections to the alleged arrest of labourers in BJP-ruled states.

Members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) were also seen holding placards with slogans like “Stop insulting Bengal”, signalling their solidarity with the broader opposition protest.

The SIR drive by the Election Commission in Bihar has sparked sharp political backlash, with the opposition alleging that the process may result in the unjust deletion of eligible voters from electoral rolls.
Since the beginning of the Monsoon Session, INDIA bloc MPs have been demanding a full-fledged discussion in Parliament on the matter.

Despite the opposition protest, legislative work continued inside the House. According to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, several key bills were scheduled for discussion:

  • Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya is set to move amendments to the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022, and introduce the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025. The new bill aims to enhance governance, ethics, fair play, and athlete welfare in line with international sporting standards.
  • Union Ports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will present the Indian Ports Bill, 2025, which seeks to streamline port laws, promote integrated development, empower State Maritime Boards, and ensure environmental and navigational safety.

Both bills are expected to play a significant role in shaping India’s future in sports administration and maritime development.

While the government continues its legislative agenda, the INDIA bloc has reiterated its demand for accountability and transparency in the ongoing voter list revision exercise, vowing to sustain pressure both inside and outside Parliament.
